Interview & Giveaway: Scary School by Derek the Ghost

Derek is an eleven-year-old ghost who haunts the classrooms and hallways of Scary School, writing down all the spine-tingling often hilarious things that go on there. Despite his ghostly state, Derek still enjoys reading comic books and hopes to one day become a master ninja. If that doesn’t work out, he will continue to share the fun of this very special, very secret school, so all kids can experience the scariest school on earth. Derek the Ghost communicates through the first-time ghost whisperer Derek Taylor Kent, who is a writer and performer in Los Angeles, California.

Why don’t you introduce yourself?

Hi everyone! I’m Derek the Ghost, author of the new book series Scary School, which is about a school where just making to lunch with all your arms and legs is considered a great die.

What was it like to die and then come back as a ghost?

I have to admit that at first I was kind of annoyed. I loved having a body. I could pick things up. I had mass. Everyone believed that I existed. And I was really hoping to become a master ninja one day and kick some butt. But, sometimes life (or death) throws you curveball and you gotta make an adjustment. I realized it was my destiny to become a ghost writer and write about all the hilarious, spooky things that go on at Scary School, and that ain’t so bad either.

What was your life like before?

I was just your average kid who loved comic books, karate movies, and basketball. Sure, some of my friends back at home thought I was weird because I was

What do your family and friends think of you being a ghost?friends with zombies, werewolves and goblins, but when you hang out those monsters everyday, it’s really not all that special. You just gotta be sure not to get on anyone’s bad side and you probably won’t get eaten.

My sister was super-excited, because she got to use her construction skills to build me my own haunted house to live in at Scary School. My parents were also thrilled because they get to still have me around but save a ton of money on food and clothes. My friends love it because I can pass through walls and tell them what’s going on anywhere in the school.

What game would you’ve played in the Ghoul Games?

Boggle. I’m a grandmaster level player at that game. I love finding words!

You’re a writer, so it’s probably safe to say you like to read. What are some of your favorite books?

I love the Harry Potter series. It’s what made me want to write novels. I also love the Wayside School series, My Life as a Stuntboy, The Beyonders, Shark Wars, and lots of other fun stuff.

What was those most fun and interesting thing to write about?

Crazy monsters with everyday problems.

Tell everyone a bit about the Scary School website and why they should check it out.

Awesome. Make sure to check out www.ScarySchool.com. I designed the whole thing myself, so you know it’s fun. There’s a video game you can play on the site, and if you beat it, you will win the weirdest trophy ever! You can also tour the school, meet the faculty and students, and check out some of the other books I’ve written that you can only get through the website. There’s tons of other secrets and easter eggs hidden throughout the site (including the secret final chapter of the book) but you’ll have to read the books to get hints about them!

I’ve seen the name Derek Taylor Kent around a bit, who is he?

The guy is my ghost whisperer. You see, Dereks can talk to other Dereks, so he’s my connection to the outside world. I’ll tell him everything that I’ve written and then it’s his job to share it with the living world. He’s a very important part of the process, but he’s also a very weird guy. I don’t know. I’m thinking about finding another Derek.

Can you tell us what to look forward to in book two?

Yes! As a prize for winning the Ghoul Games, you’ll remember that the kids of Scary School have won a very special prize – a trip to Albania to meet the Monster King. However, things do not go as planned, and the students of Scary School will have to get very lucky to make it out of Monster Kindgom alive! SCARY SCHOOL #2 – MONSTERS ON THE MARCH comes out June 26 online and in bookstores everywhere, then Book 3 will be coming out in June 2013!\
